We are offering The Game of Chess on Tuesdays, October 6 – 27 to beginners ages 7 – 12 years old and to beginners ages 12 years to adult. Ages 7 to 12 will meet from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. and ages 12 to adult will meet 5:30 to 6:30. The classes will meet in room L105 in the Adams/Vines Building on the ANC Blytheville campus. The fee is $24 for 4 sessions.

Rose Show

Anyone may exhibit in the show and may bring rose specimens between 6:00 and 10:00 a.m.  Exhibitors compete for prizes provided by area businesses and individuals.  The show will be open to the public at 1:00 p.m. and remain open until 4:00 p.m. Contact person for a show schedule is Ann Bush at P.O. Box 246, Blytheville, Arkansas 72316.

 The Rose Society invites those interested in growing roses to be participants in a Rose Seminar at 2:30 p.m. in an adjoining classroom.  Speakers will cover subjects such as making a proper rose bed, basic pruning, feeding and watering, and spraying for healthy rose growth.  They will cover tips for making those jobs easier.  Come and meet some of the Mid-South’s most avid exhibitors who are also the most expert growers. 

The Blytheville Rose Society meets monthly to extend the knowledge of horticulture, particularly of roses, to the members.  Guests are welcome and are invited to join.

A short time ago, the Arkansas Northeastern College Tennis Clinics were finishing their early summer sessions when the lone intermediate student, Joe Mobley was photographed with his Tennis Pro Instructor, Tom Holmes by Joe’s mother, Jill Mobley.

It is suspected that some strange solar phenomenon occurred that caused the two photographic subjects to undergo a metamorphosis into the following scene – the subjects were calling themselves “The Catgut Harmony Boys” as they (badly) sang Country songs while strumming the strings of their racquets. Jill Mobley captured this on film.

It is suspected that these alter egos were put into submission by the intake of water and Gatorade. The subjects were seemingly back to the Teacher-Student roles in mere minutes. It has been suggested by Doctors that Hot Sun and Walker Park may be the major contributors to this strange happening.

Editor’s note: Mr. Holmes is notorious for having 13 in his ANC tennis classes. All his tennis students enjoyed themselves working with the new stroke developing machines.

Once again, the Department of Continuing and Community Education at Arkansas Northeastern College will offer a Tennis Clinic for ages 12 years old to adult, Thursdays, September 3 – October 1, 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. Classes will meet at Blytheville Walker Park tennis court. Registration fee is $45. Students need to bring a tennis racquet, water and a cap.

Learn the fundamentals of the serve, forehand, backhand, rules, etiquette, scoring and sportsmanship from tennis enthusiast, Tom Holmes. Tennis is great exercise and a game you can play all your life. We will be creating a “Community Tennis Association” within the area to promote the growth of tennis activities for those interested.

Beginning Country & Western Line Dance

If you enjoy listening to country-western music, getting great exercise and being with friends, you may get a kick out of country and western dancing.  Once you get a few lessons under your belt from veteran Country and Western dance instructors, Gay and John, you will have enough confidence for a night of dancing. The fee is $69 for 8 sessions. The class will meet on Mondays, Sept ember 28 – November 16 ,  7:00 – 9:00 p.m. in the Clean Fun Club and Walker Park in Blytheville. 

Advanced Country & Western Line Dancing

Line dancing is great for the mind, body and spirit!  Grab a friend and come learn such favorites as the Cut a Rug, Bop the B, Sea Legs, Cajun Cross, Berlin Boogie, Good Time, Come Dance With Me, Lady Soul, Some Beach, and more. Fee is $69 for 8 sessions. Class will  in the Clean Fun Club  at Walker Park in Blytheville on Tuesdays, September 29 – November 17,      7:00 – 9:00 p.m.

 Country & Western Couple Dancing

Dance the country & western dances that are taking the country by storm.  Learn the 6 Step, 2 Step, Polka, Cotton-Eyed Joe, Waltz, 10-Step Polka, Sweetheart Schottische, Easy Stroll, Cowboy Cha-Cha, Traveling Cha-Cha, My Kind of Girl, Rose, Butterfly Waltz, East and West Coast Swing, The Bump, Butterfly Waltz, Waltz Across Texas, & MORE! John and Gay Duclos will teach the class. Enroll by couples only.  The fee is $69 a couple for 8 sessions. Class will meet on Thursdays,  October 1 – November 19,  7:00 – 9:00 p.m.

 Dancing Like the Stars

Kiss those two left feet goodbye and —swing into fall!  These classes are the perfect introduction to ballroom dancing.      Get ready to have lots of FUN and be prepared for the holiday season!  The instructor has been dancing for 6 years and learned to dance from an Arthur Murray dance instructor.   The fee is $100/couple or  $50/single for 4 sessions.  The class will meet in the Statehouse Hall Governors Ballroom. Beginning Acoustic Guitar for ages 9 years old and up

In this introductory course, the student will learn basic strumming patterns, simple chord progressions, tuning methods and note identification.  Students provide their own acoustic guitar and book.  The fee is $45 for 6 sessions. Class will meet Tuesdays, August 25 to September 29 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m in room C101 in the Sullins Adminstration Building. (With a limit of 9 participants, register early.)

Intermediate Acoustic Guitar for ages 10 years old and up

This class is designed for the developing guitarist. Students in this class should already be familiar with basic guitar chords, note names and strumming. This class will combine classical guitar techniques with contemporary strumming/choral styles. Students will also learn scale patterns and fingerings. Student provides their own acoustic guitar and book. The fee is  $45  for 6 session. Class will meet  Tuesdays, August 25 to September 29 from 5:00 p.m to 6:00 p.m. in room C101 in the Sullins Administration Builing. (With a limit of 9 participants, register early.)

Instructor: Charles Moody has been playing the guitar, banjo, harmonica, and mandolin for over 30 years. Born in Memphis, he has recorded in major studios, toured the U.S. with different bands and played at countless festivals.

Campers in grades 1^st through 8^th will receive individual instruction from BHS staff on basketball fundamentals such as ball handling, passing, rebounding, defensive skills, team play and sportsmanship.  There is emphasis on how to shoot a basketball properly.  Pre-registration is appreciated.  The camp is 4 sessions and the fee is $50 (includes t-shirt).

The camp will meet in the ANC Briggs/Sebaugh Wellness Center gym, Monday through Thursday, July 20 to 23 from 8:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
